The Nordic Inn has been a destination for families and travellers over the years. It is an all-seasons operation located in the scenic Haliburton Highlands close to Algonquin Park, the Leslie Frost Nature Centre and the Haliburton Forest Reserve. It is directly on groomed snowmobile trails, close to a great swimming beach, within minutes of two boat launch ramps on Lake of Bays , as well as ramps on Kawagama Lake. Opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing and boating, fishing, skiing and snowshoeing abound. We are located directly across from the Dorset forestry lookout tower. It is exiting to climb to the top and see over 600 sq km of lakes and forests, especially in the fall when the colours are spectacular. The Nordic Inn is located just outside the quaint hamlet of Dorset in a serene and picturesque setting. Dorset is a self- sufficient village which includes a Foodland grocery store, Home Hardware, Timbrmart, several restaurants, gift and clothing stores, a bank and several real estate businesses, 2 churches, an audio store, a museum, an art gallery, a steam boat restoration, 2 gas stations, a marina and an ice cream parlour and 2 mini-malls. It also has a recreation center with a gym and squash courts and many community activities and special interest courses. There is also an outdoor skating rink a ball diamond and a local park with picnic area and swimming beach. The town is served by a volunteer fire department and a OPP community policing building. This is a very active tourism destination which caters to guests in all seasons. This summer there was a huge fishing tournament as well as a Pig Roast, Surf and Turf, craft shows, an antique boat rally and a Ride for Dialysis and a Poker Rally for Lions Camp Dorset. In the winter there is a full weekend of activities during the Snowball Festival. We are located on 7 acres of land and the forest starts at our back door. Located directly behind us are 600 acres of Crown Land that cannot be developed. This area of forest and wetlands is abounding with birds and wildlife. The Inn holds a lease on the use of 23 kms of rugged trails within the Crown Land. This gives access to secluded Charcoal lake which is stocked with rainbow trout. These trails are perfect for walking, llama trekking, cross -country skiing, snow shoeing and mountain biking. The inn has 10 large units (350 sq ft). Each room contains the same basic amenities; full bathroom, electric heat, air conditioning, Expressvu TV, small refrigerator, table and chairs. Five of the room contain two double and one single bed. These are our standard rooms and are very popular with workers and families. Five of the rooms have either a king bed and pullout couch or one queen and one double bed. These are our upgraded rooms and are the favourites of couples. We have a suite with an in -room jacuzzi tub and stone fireplace. This room is our most popular room and is highly sought after. Even in the slow season you can count on having this room rented most weekends and it can be rented for a premium price. Finally we have a fully equipped 1100 sq ft, 2 bedroom cottage. This building has a full bathroom, kitchen, living room(with pullout couch) with a wood stove and its own deck. It is very popular for families or several couples. This was the owner residence when we moved in but for efficiency reasons my wife and I created our own apartment close to the reception area. The owners apartment, located near the reception area, consists of a living room, two bedrooms and a big bathroom with a whirlpool tub. We use the restaurant kitchen and eat in the breakfast area. We find it much more convenient to live close to the reception area and have enjoyed our apartment. The unit also has a room on the second level which we use as an exercise room but would also make an excellent playroom for those with children. On this second level there are also 3 washrooms, several storage rooms, a linen room and a laundry. We provide our guests with a deluxe continental breakfast in our breakfast dining room. The dining room can seat up to 16 people and is surrounded by a wrap around deck that can seat another 30 people. The facilities available to run a much more comprehensive restaurant and over the years we have done that but we are not as energetic as we used to be and have cut back our restaurant service. We are fully compliant with Health regulations. The kitchen also includes a walk-in refrigerator which we presently use as a pantry but can be fully operational with the flick of a switch. Over the 6 years we have been here we have made countless changes to the Inn. We added a full deck which runs the length of the Inn and is wheel chair accessible. We now have a playground and fire pit with a picnic table and barbecue. In the winter the guests love using the hot tub . We have put in new windows, air conditioners, new TVs and a variety in the size and look of the furniture. We added a sign with lettering which can be changed as you might wish. Andre also utilized unused space to built the luxury suite and he constructed the apartment and exercise room. Most important of all, in the spring we are installing a new steel roof in a lovely blue which should add a value of over $50,000 to the property. Also on the property is a heated workshop and storage shed. We presently have 7 llamas and a horse. We have several fenced fields and an open barn for the animals. We get hundred of visitors off the highway to observe the llamas.
(more to come, Andre)
